Sergey M. Kirov (1886-1934) was the First Secretary of the Leningrad Regional Party Committee, the head of one of the huge regions of the Soviet Union. He was also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee - the country’s governing Party body. Kirov was one of the closest friends and supporters of Josef Stalin.
December 1 1934, Sergey M. Kirov was assassinated by Leonid Nicolaev. The circumstances of the assassination have to this day not been fully explained.
